In the Community: Carpe Diem Education

On Alberta Street in North Portland the door to Carpe Diem Education is a gateway to experiences around the world. Ethan Knight and his team lead older high school and college students on trips to countries across the globe where they learn through cross-cultural exchange and expand the boundaries of their known world. Carpe Diem also works with schools to provide credit for their programs, offering a rich semester abroad opportunity to those looking for experiential, and not just theoretical, education. Students learn and serve: as in the Southeast Asia trip, where over 12 weeks they study local languages and volunteer at social and environmental nonprofits in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

If you or anyone you know has an 17 - 22 year old that you feel could benefit from this amazing experiential semester abroad, check out their website and call the office to learn more. There are still plenty of spots left on the trips departing this February.

In the Community: Water Avenue Coffee

Water Avenue Coffee (WAC) opened just more than a year ago in the Central Eastside Industrial District. More than just a cafe, Water Avenue offers a huge variety of coffees roasted in house. In fact, stick around all day and you'll probably get to experience a batch of beans come out of WAC's vintage 1974 French Samiac 20-kilo Roaster.  Also, the staff members aren't just a group of baristas, they are a group of coffee-enthusiasts, many of whom participate as instructors in one of co-owners Bruce Miletto, Matt Miletto, and Brandon Smyth's other ventures—American Barista and Coffee School.

WAC's menu of caffeinated delights include the greatest new (and old) ways to enjoy your coffee, including french-press, espresso, pour-over, and cold-pressed. Plus, as the beans are roasted in house, you'll find an ever-changing array of whole-bean coffees bagged up for you to take home. Of course, maybe you'd just like to have that fresh roasted flavor in your own neighborhood coffeeshop? Water Avenue Coffee wholesale has you covered. They provide beans to cafes across town, and can always add more. Visit their website here for more information and details on their current featured coffees.
